Wishard Health Services

VolunTEEN

The VolunTEEN summer program runs from June through August and allows volunteers ages 12 to 18 opportunities to interact with patients, staff and other teens.

The volunteer program at Wishard is useful to teens because they can earn service learning hours and the experience they gain can be useful for college and scholarships. It's also a great opportunity to gain career-related experience, make new friends and have a fun-filled summer.

Teens who are between the ages of 12 and 15 can participate in a variety of non-clinical volunteer experiences. These positions include:

  • transporting patients
  • participating in recreational activities
  • delivering hospital mail
  • baking cookies
  • passing out books
  • reading to children in waiting rooms
  • assisting with office functions

Teens who are 16 or older are able to participate in clinical and non-clinical opportunities. In a clinical setting, volunteers will interact one-on-one with patients, clients and medical staff. Clinical volunteer areas include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Emergency Department
  • Surgery Recovery Room
  • Radiology
  • Dental Clinic
  • IU National Center of Excellence in Women's Health
  • Special Medicine
  • Inpatient Units
  • Community Health Centers
