Trauma Training and Education

Air_Evac_lo_res.JPGThe physicians and staff of the IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center offer several educational programs for students and professionals in the field:

Trauma Evaluation and Management (TEAM) Course
The TEAM Course was designed by the American College of Surgeons to be taught to third-year medical students. This course provides basic instruction in the initial care of the trauma patient. Students taking the TEAM Course at the IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center participate in a series of lectures and watch interactive video footage depicting several trauma care scenarios. The course instructors also provide case presentation to illustrate the variety of trauma patients that are treated in the Emergency Department.

Advanced Trauma Life Support
The IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center continues to offer both regular ATLS provider and instructor courses that are staffed by qualified Indiana University School of Medicine faculty. There are four provider courses each year in addition to numerous refresher and instructor courses held at the hospital.

Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) Course
The ATOM Course was designed by leading trauma surgeons as a follow-up course to the Advanced Trauma Life Support course. This course, which combines a series of interactive lecture presentations and a surgical laboratory experience, increases participant knowledge and procedural skills in surgical interventions for injuries from penetrating trauma. This includes surgical repair of injuries to the spleen, diaphragm, liver, pancreas, and organs of the genitourinary, cardiac and vascular systems. The IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center was designated as the Midwest Instruction Center. This course will be offered to senior level residents of the Indiana University General Surgery Residency Program and staff physicians throughout the midwest.

Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC)/Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC)
TNCC and ENPC are Emergency Nurses Association courses dedicated to providing a standardized education program to enhance knowledge of emergency nurses, both in cognitive and psychomotor skills with the adult and pediatric population respectively. The IU/Wishard Level 1 Trauma Center nurse coordinators and Emergency Department nurses actively participate as instructors and course coordinators throughout the year providing four courses in Marion County in 2005.

Trauma Symposium
The 2005 Trauma Symposium drew nationally-renowned speakers who presented educational seminars to physicians, nurses, pre-hospital providers, and other medical professionals on advances to the discipline of trauma care. The Symposium included topics on vascular trauma, priorities in trauma care, orthopedic trauma, initial resuscitation and organ donation. The presentation of the Jay L. Grosfeld Recognition Award was to George Rodman, MD. The program extended on Saturday with a focus on weapons of mass destruction and the roles of a nurse, medic and surgeon during the War on Terrorism. In addition to the didactic seminars, in 2006, there will be a cadaver dissection section and the American College of Surgeons’ Region V Paper Competition.

Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
In conjunction with the IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center, the Wishard Health Services EMS Department holds regular PHTLS courses. The trauma staff actively participates in the PHTLS courses; these courses are a modified version of ATLS taught to pre-hospital personnel.

Hazardous Materials Disaster Preparedness Advanced Training Program
The IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center is providing a hazardous materials and emergency preparedness provider training program for hazardous materials workers, first line responders and hospital-based workers.
