IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center

The IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center provides the most extensive quality and range of trauma care to Indianapolis and surrounding areas. IU and Wishard take pride in being the first of only two adult Level I trauma centers in the state of Indiana.

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the Committee on Trauma Verification/Consultation Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process.

Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma in its Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual.

What Makes a Trauma Center a Level I?

  • Level I trauma centers serve a region of people.
  • Facilities and staff focus on the entire trauma process, from prevention to care to rehabilitation.
  • They have specially trained staff, state-of-the-art equipment and broad knowledge in the trauma field.
  • They comply with requirements set forth by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma with the goal of providing optimal care of trauma patients.
