Emergency Department

Wishard Health Services has a long history of providing the residents of central Indiana with state-of-the-art emergency services. Wishard operates one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the state of Indiana, caring for over 105,000 patients in 2011. The Emergency Department is staffed and equipped to evaluate and manage any type of acute illness or injury with a 93-bed capacity ranging in acuity from resuscitation rooms to monitored beds and examination rooms.
The Wishard Emergency Department is made up of over 30 physicians, all specifically trained in emergency medicine. Several have additional training in pediatrics, toxicology and pre-hospital care. All physicians are a part of the IU School of Medicine.

Please note:
Patients are not seen in the order they arrived. They are first seen by the seriousness of their illness or injury and then by the order in which they arrive. Patients are evaluated by a specially-trained triage nurse who determines how severe each person’s illness or injury is. Wait times depend on many things so it is difficult to provide an estimated time.
