Grant to Aid Wishard’s Community Health Centers

Indianapolis, March 2, 2009 – Today the Wishard Foundation announces the receipt of a $300,000 grant designated for Wishard Health Services’ Community Health Centers. The grant was awarded by the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation and will be paid over three years. The funds will support the Community Health Centers’ general operating needs.
"This funding will help our Community Health Centers continue to offer the excellent care they give to everyone who walks through their doors," said James Wood, president and chief executive officer of the Wishard Foundation.
Wishard Health Services operates eight Community Health Centers located throughout Indianapolis. Each of the Community Health Centers provides comprehensive primary and preventive health services to local area residents. Some of the services offered include primary care for adults and children along with specialty services such as OB/GYN, social services, mental health care and nutritional counseling.
"The Community Health Centers are vital to our patients allowing them the ability to manage common chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and asthma at a center located in their neighborhood," said Dr. Lisa E. Harris, chief executive officer and medical director for Wishard Health Services. "At these facilities patients have access to an array of services including primary and preventive care, prenatal care, social services, dental services and more."
"With only 5.7 percent of our budget coming from property taxes, the funding we receive through grants and charitable giving is vital to the operation of Wishard Health Services," said Matthew R. Gutwein, president and chief executive officer, Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, which owns and operates Wishard Health Services."This extraordinary gift will have an immediate and profound impact on the healthcare of our community's most vulnerable."
