Indianapolis, November 21, 2006 – Holiday shoppers will not only have a chance to browse the dozens of shops and boutiques that Glendale Mall has to offer, but they will also have a chance to learn about ways to stay healthy as Wishard Health Services and WTHR Channel 13 team up to give the community the gift of health this holiday season. On Saturday, December 9 shoppers are encouraged to take advantage of free health screenings including blood pressure, cholesterol, depression and more at Glendale Mall. Glendale Mall is located at 6101 North Keystone Ave. in Indianapolis.
The fair will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a team of healthcare professionals will be on hand to answer questions for those visiting information booths on senior care, women's health, mental health services, nutrition, smoking cessation, organ donation, Medicare Part D and other services.
One of the highlights of the health fair will be one on one medication education sessions hosted by Wishard’s Pharmacy and Senior Care programs. The sessions will include Wishard pharmacists assisting the public with tips to manage their prescription drugs. The public is encouraged to bring their medications and ask questions. There will also be an open forum with tips on the safe use of over-the-counter and herbal products starting at 10 a.m.
"During the holiday season we often find that people unintentionally neglect their health whether it is by overeating at family gatherings or by allowing the holiday rush to add to their stress level. The Healthy Living for the Holidays Health Fair provides the perfect opportunity for many to come out and take advantage of free health screenings and learn more about ways to maintain healthy living," said Dr. Ann Zerr, chief medical officer for Wishard's community health centers.
In addition to health screenings, participants can learn how to keep their families safer. The IU/Wishard Level I Trauma Center, one of only two Level I trauma centers in Indiana, will provide child safety information and pass out brochures and pamphlets to parents. Midtown Community Mental
Health Center, a division of Wishard Health Services, will also be on hand to provide information to the public. Spanish interpreters and bilingual pamphlets and health information will also be available at the fair.
Some of the groups and organizations that will be participating in the Healthy Living for the Holidays Health Fair include the IU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at Wishard, Indianapolis Public Schools’ Parents as FIRST Teachers program, Indiana Hearing Aid at Castleton, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, Senior Health Insurance Information Program, Marion County Health Department, Prevent Blindness Indiana, Senior Care at Wishard and Wishard Advantage.
