Indianapolis, July 5, 2006 – Since its inception, the Wishard Wellness program has focused on various ways to bring healthier life-style options to Wishard Health Services’ many patients and visitors as well as its staff. Through input, surveys and an intensive review of services, Wishard has implemented several healthy initiatives aimed at giving more options for all who travel through Wishard’s facilities.
In continuing its efforts to offer healthy options, Wishard has become the first central Indiana hospital with an on-site Subway Restaurant. A grand opening will be held July 7 at the Wishard Subway starting at 11:15 a.m. Hoosier Jared Fogle, Subway spokesperson, will be on hand for the opening and will provide helpful health tips for those in attendance. The restaurant is located in the lower level of the Primary Care Center on the Wishard campus, 1002 Wishard Blvd.
“Wellness is an important initiative here at Wishard,” said Mary Robbins-Nierste, R.N., director of Wishard Wellness. “We’re committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle for our patients, guests and staff. We felt that Subway’s fresh ingredients and many low-fat menu offerings were a good fit for Wishard Health Services.”
Starting last year with “Simple Steps to Wellness,” where Wishard staff members were rewarded with various health-related prizes for their efforts toward wellness, Wishard has initiated a number of programs aimed at fostering a healthier environment for all.
This year Wishard has placed a greater emphasis on nutrition by providing classes for employees and listing all food sold in the Wishard Cafeteria on a fact sheet with the nutritional values such as calories and fat content marked. Wishard was also one of several area healthcare facilities that went smoke-free last summer.
Subway Restaurant is the world’s largest submarine chain and offers a variety of healthier menu options. During 2005, the Subway chain opened its 5,000th “non traditional” location, which means you can enjoy a Subway sandwich in such varied places as college campuses and fairgrounds, athletic clubs, hospitals, truck stops, airports and department stores.
