Indianapolis, November 21, 2005 - Holiday shoppers will not only have a chance to browse the dozens of shops and boutiques that Glendale Mall has to offer, but they will also have a chance to learn about ways to stay healthy this holiday season as Wishard Health Services and WTHR Channel 13 team up to give the community the gift of health. On Saturday, December 10 shoppers are encouraged to take advantage of free health screenings including blood pressure, diabetes, depression, osteoporosis and children's dental assessments at Glendale Mall. Glendale Mall is located at 6101 North Keystone Ave. in Indianapolis.
The fair will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a team of healthcare professionals will be on hand to answer questions for those visiting information booths on such topics as senior care, women's health, mental health services, nutrition, smoking cessation, organ donation, domestic violence prevention and other services. Free chair massages will also be given on the day of the event.
"During the holiday season we often find that people unintentionally neglect their health whether it is by overeating unhealthy snacks and non-nutritious meals at family gatherings or by allowing the holiday rush to add to their stress level. The Healthy Living for the Holidays Health Fair provides the perfect opportunity for many to come out and take advantage of free health screenings and learn more about ways to maintain healthy living," said Dr. Ann Zerr, chief medical officer for Wishard's community health centers.
In addition to health screenings, participants can learn how to keep their families safer. The IU/Wishard Trauma Center, one of only two Level I trauma centers in Indiana, will provide accident prevention education and pass out gun safety locks to parents. Midtown Community Mental Health Center, a division of Wishard Health Services, will also provide interactive demonstrations that simulate the effects of drinking and driving by use of "intoxication goggles."
Some of the groups and organizations that will be participating in the Healthy Living for the Holidays Health Fair include the Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Hearing Aid at Castleton, IU National Center of Excellence in Women's Health at Wishard, MD Wise, Indiana College of Body Works, Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, Kool Smile General Dentistry and Wishard Advantage.
