Indianapolis - On Wednesday, May 17 at 10 a.m. Midtown Community Mental Health Center will host a flower-planting ceremony to recognize the 54 million Americans who are living with a mental illness. The ceremony will take place at Midtown Community Mental Health Center's 1700 Place, located at 1700 N. Illinois Street.
Midtown Community Mental Health Center, a division of Wishard Health Services, along with Brighter Beginnings™ in Mental Health, a program that celebrates hope for people living with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, are teaming up to help educate the community about mental health disorders. The ceremony will feature keynote speakers discussing the importance of mental health awareness.
"Everyone knows someone with a mental illness or addiction. Mental illness affects our families and our communities. It touches all of us," said Dr. Steven Fekete, medical director, Midtown Community Mental Health Center. "This month is designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, not just to promote awareness and encourage treatment, but to reflect on the impact mental illness has had on our loved ones, our family and our friends."
Brighter Beginnings™ is a national effort intended to involve seasonal beautification ceremonies and activities at individual mental healthcare facilities.
Midtown Community Mental Health Center was established in 1969 as the first mental health center in Indiana and offers an array of mental health services including severe mental illness and substance abuse treatment, 24-hour emergency services, a detoxification unit, full continuum for chronically addicted patients, specialized home- and community-based programs for seriously emotionally disturbed children and adolescents and a partial-hospitalization program.
